Tallgrass Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 30, 2026
Tallgrass is a training and nutrition app for iPhone and Apple Watch. This policy explains what the app does with your information. In short: your data stays on your devices and in your own iCloud. There are no ads, no tracking, and nothing is sold. We (the developer) run no server that receives your data, and we can't see it.
What Tallgrass stores, and where
- On your iPhone: your training plan, workout logs, food log and your own foods, recipes, saved workouts, personal bests, goals, water, weigh-ins, GLP-1 doses (if you track them), check-ins, trophies and settings. These files are encrypted by iOS while your iPhone is locked.
- In your iCloud (when iCloud Sync is on, the default): the same data, in your private iCloud database, and your settings, in iCloud key-value storage. This lets your data come back after reinstalling or on a new iPhone. Apple stores it in your iCloud account; we can't access it. You can turn iCloud Sync off in Settings → iCloud Sync.
- On your Apple Watch: your upcoming sessions and settings, sent from your iPhone, and workouts in progress.
Apple Health
With your permission, Tallgrass reads from and writes to Apple Health. Health data is used only to provide the app's features. It is never used for advertising, never sold, and never sent to us.
- Reads: workouts (with their distance, heart rate, active calories and routes), heart rate, steps, weight, height, water, date of birth and sex. Used to review your runs against your plan, find personal bests, work out heart-rate zones and calorie targets, and show your progress.
- Writes: workouts you do with Tallgrass (strength sessions, runs with their distance and, for outdoor runs, their route), the food you log (calories, protein, carbs, fat, and fiber, sugar and sodium when known), water and weigh-ins you enter.
Tallgrass asks for all of this once, when you first open the app; you can skip it. Change these permissions any time in the Health app → Profile → Apps → Tallgrass.
What leaves your device, and why
Only when you use the feature that needs it:
- Food search (USDA FoodData Central): the words you search for, and a barcode's number when you scan one. Sent to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's FoodData Central service.
- Barcode lookups (Open Food Facts): the barcode number you scan. Sent to Open Food Facts.
- Recipe import from a link: Tallgrass loads the web page you link to, like a browser would.
- Food photo and recipe estimates (Anthropic): the photo, text or ingredients you choose, and any note you add, are sent to Anthropic, which runs the Claude AI model, to estimate nutrition. Tallgrass asks before the first time. Nothing else about you is sent: no name, account, location or Health data.
- Race search (RunSignup): the race name, ZIP code, distance and dates you search for.
- iCloud (Apple): your data, as described above, when iCloud Sync is on.
These requests carry no information that identifies you. Each service handles requests under its own privacy policy.
Location
Your Apple Watch uses your location only during outdoor runs, to measure distance and pace and to save the route to Apple Health. During outdoor runs tracked by your Watch, your iPhone uses location permission only to keep Tallgrass running so it can announce miles and pace alerts; your iPhone doesn't record your location. Location is never sent to us or anyone else.
Notifications
Tallgrass sends local notifications (rest timers, run announcements when speech can't play, and GLP-1 dose reminders if you turn them on). They're created on your device. Dose reminders never show the medication name or dose on your lock screen.
Camera and photos
The camera scans barcodes and takes food or recipe photos. A photo leaves your iPhone only when you ask for an estimate (see Anthropic above). Barcode scanning happens on your device.
What we don't do
- No ads, no advertising identifiers, and no tracking across apps or websites.
- No analytics or crash-reporting services.
- This website (tallgrass.trstreamline.com) uses no cookies, analytics or trackers.
- We don't sell or share your data, and we have no server that collects it.
Exporting and deleting your data
- Export: Settings → About → Export My Data gives you a zip of your data files.
- Delete: Settings → About → Delete All My Data erases your data on your iPhone and in your iCloud. Data you allowed Tallgrass to write to Apple Health stays in Health; delete it in the Health app. You can also remove the iCloud copy in the Settings app → your name → iCloud → Manage Storage → Tallgrass. Deleting the app removes the data on your iPhone.
Children
Tallgrass isn't directed to children under 13.
Medical disclaimer
Tallgrass gives general fitness and nutrition guidance, not medical advice. It records and reminds you about medications you enter but never recommends doses.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
